Celebrating National Cheeseburger Day

The month of September has a couple of special occasions that appeal
to us.  For the workers of the
world clamoring for a much needed three-day weekend, it’s Labor Day. For
football fans, it’s the start of The National Football League (NFL) season (a national
holiday depending on who you ask). But for burger lovers out there, September’s
got your back because today is National Cheeseburger Day.
Although the day isn’t recognized as a national holiday, enthusiasts of
this great sandwich can have an excuse to grab one at their local eatery. This
national treasure’s invention is credited to Lionel Sternberger, a fry cook
that worked in his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop. Sternberger,
during a random kitchen experiment, dropped a slice of American cheese on top of
a hamburger patty and the rest was history.
As the cheeseburgers popularity grew, so did its consumption.
A recent study shows that Americans eat three hamburgers a week equating to a
national average of 50 billion burgers per year. Another report shows Americans
consume 23 pounds of cheese each year.  No
matter if it’s a mid-day lunch, late night snack, or barbecue entree, the cheeseburger
is one of the premier foods in the United States.  So burger fans nationwide, take this opportunity
today to revel in this beefy marvel.
